Sept

Anna Meredith with Oliver Coates & Eleanor Meredith

September 2 · 8:00pm – 10:00pm

Following its summer break, Cryptic Nights returns to the CCA on Thursday 2nd September with a collaboration from two of the most exciting young names in UK new music. Composer Anna Meredith and cellist/composer Oliver Coates will showcase entirely new works for Cryptic Nights, fusing live electronics and cello, with visuals courtesy of visual artist and film-maker Eleanor Meredith.

Both Anna and Oliver boast incredibly diverse musical resumes: Anna’s career as a concert composer has involved writing for most of the UK’s leading ensembles and performers as well as electronic artists such as Matmos and Shlomo, whilst Oliver has won acclaim both as performer on his native instrument of cello, and through work with artists as diverse as David Fennessy, Boards of Canada and Massive Attack.

Sonic references on the night will take in everything from the avant garde, dissonant and extreme through to lush melody, crisp beats and harmonious pop.

Anna Meredith’s music has been described as “thundering, post-Industrial electronics” … “[evoking] the harsher end of Hyperdub while demonstrating admirable chutzpah in her juxtaposition of pipe samples from Scotland and Morocco….” WIRE

Oliver Coates was highlighted recently by The Times as ‘a stand-out performer who played electronically mangled yet attractively dissonant pieces’ at Faster than Sound Festival, Aldeburgh 2008.

Eleanor Meredith is a Scottish illustrator/animator based in London. A graduate of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art (2006) and subsequently, Central Saint Martins (2006), clients have included the Skinny, South Bank Centre and Camberwell Composers Collective.
